According to the American Heart Association
(AHA), 500,000 coronary artery bypass surgeries
are performed each year in the United States.
Although the surgery is often successful, some
patients have neurological complications after
surgery, including confusion, memory loss and
stroke.
We offer off-pump (also called “beating heart”)
bypass surgery to give patients a less-invasive
option in treating coronary artery disease. Several
AHA studies show the following results:
- Patients undergoing coronary bypass surgery
may have fewer neurological complications
if a pump supporting the heart and lungs is
not used.
- Overweight patients who have off-pump
bypass surgery may have half the
complications of a traditional operation.
- Bypass surgery on a beating heart may be
the best option for women and men over
age 80, leading to fewer strokes and higher
30-day survival rates.
